  • These poor migrants will arrive and be trapped in the hyper-competition of 헬조선. They won’t be able to get hired for white-collar jobs because they haven’t gone to Korean universities. They will be socially ostracized for acting like “barbarians” and having low-status jobs. Their children will be bullied at school, ostracized, depressed, forced to attend 학원 in a sharp break from their lives on the steppe.

North Koreans face all the same obstacles upon arrival.

It’s literally just a program to get more laborers in a society that 3/4 of the population must get some kind of degree. This mayor hopes it will be easier to deal with ethnic Koreans than actual Kazakhs, Nepalese, Bangladeshis, and Pakistanis (more common nationalities for such imported labor)

More and more Koreans refuse to do things like farming, fishing, and factory work because, despite the often good wages, they cannot marry upward, which is the dream of all Korean mothers. Immigrant labor is the simplest way forward in that situation, but it’s deeply unpopular so it goes mostly un-talked about. Korea’s left wing is actually more xenophobic than its right wing.

At the other end of the spectrum, Korea has been giving free education to Western college students for more than a decade, yet offered them no path to residency, let alone citizenship. White-collar jobs, it seems, are only for Koreans unless absolutely necessary. The foreign student program is mostly to raise the international profile and standing of Korean schools.

    Welcome to 헬조선!
