Gaetz is like a reverse canary in a coal mine, Trump nominated him so he can see who will be loyal to him this time, that way he can purge them. Which is scary enough on its own, but it also means we still may get AG Ken Paxton which is like getting punched in the face and then kicked in the balls
No way Trump has that much foresight, he just likes the things Gaetz stands for. (i.e. gargling Trump’s balls.)
The fact that others loathe him is probably also seen as a plus in Trump’s eyes.
